What is SCADA?
A system called SCADA, or supervisory control and data acquisition, is used to monitor and manage industrial operations. SCADA is made up of both hardware and software components. A SCADA system allows manufacturers to monitor and manage alarms, program automated control reactions that are triggered by specific events or system characteristics, and gather and analyst real-time production data.
Functions
The core functions of SCADA include:
- System monitoring
- Industrial processes and machinery under automated control
- Data collection and analysis
- Event and Alarm Notifications
- Reporting
SCADA interfaces with sensors and other measuring equipment, which can be either digital or analogue in form, to carry out these operations and gather data. In order to convert the acquired data into useful information, it is subsequently transferred to a remote terminal unit (RTU) or programmable logic controller (PLC). In order for operators to analyses and interact with the data, it is finally transmitted to a human machine interface (HMI) or other types of displays.
Industrial processes and equipment that would normally be too complicated for manual human control may now be automated thanks to SCADA systems. SCADA systems are able to automatically respond to aberrant parameters or alerts by using sensors and measurement equipment to detect them. For instance, the SCADA system would activate a pre-programmed response to release a pressure relief valve to reduce pressure levels if an alert signaled too high pressure in a line.
SCADA Platforms & Applications
Although there are several SCADA platforms available, Rockwell Factory Talk, Siemens WinCC, Wonderware Systems Platform, and Ignition are among the most widely used. Each of these systems can be created using current web technologies like HTML5, Python, and PHP and combined with all-purpose database tools like SQL.
An application for a SCADA system that is prevalent is energy usage measurements and monitoring. The SCADA system may assist operators in this application by analysing energy consumption data obtained from linked equipment and using that data to reduce costs and energy waste. SCADA is frequently used in food and beverage facilities to optimise production rates and raise product quality as well as in water/wastewater treatment plants to control the various phases of water treatment.
Who Uses SCADA Systems?
Process Solutions has finished SCADA projects for customers in a variety of sectors, including:
- Food and beverage processing
- Pharmaceutical/Bio-tech
- Water/Wastewater management
- HVAC and commercial building management
- Energy pipelines and utilities
- Seafood processing
- Sorting and fulfillment
- Energy management and refrigeration
How Can SCADA Help You?
By giving operators and management relevant production insights, a SCADA system may reduce production waste and increase overall efficiency at your plant. A SCADA system's information may help with data-driven choices, which can enhance production, lower costs, and give you more control over your processes.
Instant alerting and automatic system reaction to system alerts are further advantages of SCADA. Operators and backup systems can react more quickly to faults in the manufacturing process, which reduces equipment downtime and lost output.
